Important Adoption Information
Please read information below before applying!  Any questions on the information posted below or the application process can be submitted using the form above.
  • Adoption Range:
    • South Dakota
    • North Dakota
    • Minnesota
    • Iowa
    • Nebraska
      • Placements out of southeastern South Dakota (Vermillion/Sioux Falls region) allowed only with arrangement for rescue group or other approved entity to conduct home visit.
  •  Adoption Donations:
    • A donation ranging from $75 to $350 will be collected upon adoption of any boxer.
    • Adoption donation is not tax deductable.
    • Fees are based on individual dogs and not on the expenses paid for that dog.
    • As with any donation, feel free to give more to help the boxers who are to come...unfortunately, there will always be more.
  •  Application Process:
    • Application completed, FULLY, and submitted.
      • References checked.
      • Application and reference information goes before committee for approval.
    • Home visit scheduled and completed.
      • If home is outside southeastern South Dakota (Sioux Falls/Vermillion region), arrangements must be made for local entity to perform home visit.  If this is the case, a phone interview may also be conducted.
Home visit information and all application, references, goes before committee for final approval.
  • Matching boxer to home:
    • With final approval on file, THEN *and only then* are matches to a boxer (or boxers) made.
      • The matches rely more on the need of the boxer than the wants of the home!
        • Although consideration is made for a family's individual preferences, please know that the boxer's best interest are our first concern.  If you have "chosen" a particuar boxer, this preference is taken into consideration, but please understand if that boy or girl is not matched to your home.
    • Boxer (or boxers) matched to home are presented to the prospective family.
      • If you feel a particular boxer is not for you, please let us know!  Although we have great experience and success with this process, we certainly don't want to give you a dog you don't want.
      • The match for your home may take some time, depending on your home situation.  Be patient, your boxer is out there...somewhere...waiting!
    • With a go from the family, a meeting will be set up between boxer and family.
      • Again, even if a boxer looks good on paper to you, if upon meeting the boxer is not for you/your family, let us know!  We have gotten to this point and the *click* that should be there for it to be successful just wasn't there.  When it is right, we all feel it...and it is a beautiful thing.
  • Placement:
    • Transfer will take place in the Sioux Falls or Vermillion area.
      • Rarely is an exception made!  You can ask, but don't rely on SDBR for transport.
      • All families must travel to Sioux Falls/Vermillion region.
    • Adoption donation is payable upon taking your boxer home.
      • Adoption donation is non-refundable.
    • Adoption contract is required.
      • Contract specifies boxer will be returned to SDBR if adoptive home cannot keep the boxer for any reason.
      • Contract specifies boxer will be kept current on all vetting.
    • For dogs three years and under, obedience contract required.
  • Supplies to have when taking your boxer home:
    • Adopter must supply own leash and collar.
    • Adopter must supply dog food for adopted dog.
      • SDBR does prefer and recommend high quality kibble.
      • SDBR will also supply information on all raw diets.
      • High quality diet does lead to better health for your boxer!!!
        • Better health leads to a great reduction in vet expenses.
        • Better health leads to good coat which means little to no shedding.
    • SDBR recommends making appointment to have your boxer microchipped.
      • While we would love to have all our boxers microchipped before leaving our program, at this time this is financially not realistic.  The best way to assure your boxer will be returned should he/she wander is to microchip.
    • SDBR recommends crating your boxer, adopter must supply crate.
      • Crate training does take place during the foster care period.
      • Dogs are denning animals.  A small defined area can make a dog feel safe and secure.  This is especially important during periods of transition, such as relocating to another home.
      • Crating is for the boxer's safety as much as for the safety of your home.
