The Boxer. With him I know a secret comfort and a private peace.
He has taught me understanding where before I was ignorant.
His head on my knee can heal my human hurts.
-- Gene Hill

Announcement:  SD Boxer Rescue will hold a "meet the breed" meet and greet at Sioux Falls PetCo on May 17th.  Come meet some great dogs!  (and volunteers will be there to answer any questions you might have) We will also be taking applications and interviewing for foster families.

Please visit our Boxer Family Updates to see some highlighted stories and pictures that help show why we do what we do :-)

We also have some examples of our successful adoptions in our "boxer successes" pages. We have many more successful adoptions than are shown on those pages though! They are just a sample to show you some of our happy families.

Feel free to contact us if you have questions about the Boxer breed or about how rescue works.
We want to thank all of our adoptive families, foster families and volunteers. Their love and devotion to the breed and tireless dedication make this work!

We invite you to visit our boxer successes pages as well which share some of the many stories of boxers finding forever homes.

Why Rescue??

Boxers get out and get lost, are surrendered by families who have had to move, changed their home circumstances, developed allergies, found a dog to be more work or time consuming than they expected, death, divorce and many more reasons.  Some have come from less than ideal circumstances, but generally all are loving, forgiving beings.

Boxers in rescue are not all the worst case scenario!  They are not adult dogs beyond training (old dogs can learn new tricks!), they are not dogs with incurable health problems (we fully vet and care for any dog through our program -- if any boxer does have special needs, the adoptive home will know this up front), and they are not vicious or aggressive (this is why our foster program is in place, we can test all boxers for any issues and deal with them before they go to a forever home).

These dogs have become homeless through no fault of their own and are eager to belong with a family "pack" again...or, in the case of many dogs in rescue who have come from breeding facilities, eager to belong to a family "pack" and learn how to be spoiled for the first time ever.

When you come to rescue, you find boxers who have been temperament tested (although no dog ever comes with a guarantee...these dogs have spent time in loving, boxer experienced homes), spayed/neutered, and brought up to date on health care.

You will save a life and have a forever friend!!

Your adoption donations allow us to continue to save more boxers.  We specialize in the breed we love because we understand their personalities and their needs.  We can tell you what to expect from them, what to do to be a good companion to them, and how to be a strong leader for them.

Help!

There are so many ways you can help!

We are always in need of good foster homes!!!  Foster homes help our boxers adjust and become prepared for a forever home in a loving family!!  Some boxers are easy, some more of a challenge -- but watching them settle in and blossom, they all will grab your heart.  Foster families are also given first adoption rights -- should they fall in love and be unable to part with their foster, he or she can become a permanent part of their family.  Both long-term (home that keeps a dog until it finds its forever home) and respite (short-term, week at most, to help other foster homes if they are unable to foster due to travel or other circumstance) foster homes needed!!

We always need:

  • Funds (good old cash, soon to be tax deductible)!  Sadly, a good number of our boxers come out of abusive or negectful situations and require extensive veterinary care before placement.  Our adoption donations seldom cover their medical expenses.  If you prefer, donations can be made directly to our veterinary office.
  • Dog beds.
  • Dog treats and high quality dog food.
  • Dog toys.
  • Collars and leashes.
  • Dog bowls.
  • Blankets.
  • Any miscellaneous items we can sell to raise money for our efforts.  We host an annual rummage sale and are looking at selling via ebay.

We are happy to answer any questions you might have about boxers or about South Dakota Boxer Rescue!!

We require adoption applications, home visits and adoption contracts for all of our dogs.  Because of the home visit and follow up required, we adopt to the adjacent area in South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa.

Thank you!
